Physical Education and School Sport
Intent
• The aim of our PE Curriculum is for our children to develop a love of physical activity and sport as well as the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to lead healthy active lives. The development of values and life skills are central to the delivery and will equip the children to be the best they can be in school and beyond.
School Sport
• Competition plays an important part in our PE Curriculum, providing children with motivation to achieve a goal, demonstrate determination, perseverance to overcome a challenge, understand that hard work and commitment leads to greater chance of success. Our range of extra-curricular sports and activities provide further competitive opportunities for all our children.
Physical Activity
• We strive for our children to be as physically active throughout the day as possible. We send a strong message that children need to be active at home as well as in school. Not only does this improve the children’s overall health and fitness, it helps to improve their mental health, cognitive development and their ability to concentrate and maintain focus in lessons.
Implementation
We begin to develop pupils’ fundamental movement skills and agility, balance and coordination in Early Years Foundation Stage and, as set out in the National Curriculum, we build on this in Key Stage 1. The pupils experience a broad range of opportunities, individually and with others to become increasingly competent and confident. They engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations. In KS2, pupils continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
To ensure that pupils develop secure skills and knowledge that they can build on, our PE curriculum is organised into a progression model that outlines the skills, knowledge and vocabulary to be taught in a sequentially coherent way. The curriculum includes games (invasion, striking and fielding and net and wall games) dance, gymnastics, OAA, swimming, athletics as well as fitness which are all mapped out to ensure that pupils build on secure prior knowledge. We use Complete PE as our curriculum driver where we map out our long term plans which incorporate a broad and balanced variety of activities to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. Pupils participate in at least 2 hours of PE each week. Alongside our curriculum provision, we provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school, in addition to competitions and festivals within the North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership.
Impact
At The Grange, ‘pupil voice’ shows that pupils are confident and able to talk about what they have learnt in PE using subject specific vocabulary. Pupil voice also demonstrates that pupils enjoy PE and are able to recall their learning over time. Pupils’ performances in lessons demonstrates that PE is taught at an age-appropriate standard across each year group with opportunities planned in for pupils working at greater depth. Performances are of good quality and demonstrates pupils are acquiring knowledge, skills and vocabulary in an appropriate sequence. We use Complete PE’s online assessment tool to track progress, this shows that pupils are meeting age-appropriate standards across the school. Extra-curricular clubs and competitions provided through the local sports partnership and local school leagues enable children to participate in competitive sport. This has led to many children forming external links with clubs in the community as well as being identified and placed on gifted and talented pathways. Through the effective use of our sports premium, the school has been able to improve the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity. Furthermore, the profile of PE and sport has been raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement. Teachers are more confident at teaching PE due to the support CPD from our specialist PE teacher and sports partnership. A broader range of sports and activities have been offered to pupils and there has been an increase in the participation in competitive sport. External measures are also used to assess the impact of our PE curriculum. We have been awarded the Gold Standard for The Youth Sport Trust Quality Mark which demonstrates that our PE, School Sport and Physical Activity provision is of a high standard. We also complete School Games Mark every year which reflects our commitment to the development of competition across the school and into the community.
